Sleepover

Is it a good thing when your 5-year-old can spend a day-and-a-half away from you and not even blink?

Zoe spent the night at the neighbor's house Saturday night. The little girl who lives there....well, I guess I shouldn't call her a little girl because she'll be 13 tomorrow. But we've known her since she was 7, and now she babysits for Max and Zoe on a regular basis. It's funny, because she's an only child, so she has none of those natural negotiating and survival skills one develops with siblings. When she started babysitting for Max and Zoe, there were a few rough days--for her. Max and Zoe had a great time driving her to tears.

But, once again, I've gone off on a tangent.

So, on Saturday I asked NeighborGirl to babysit for Zoe while I took Max to baseball practice, and then to a soccer game (it was rainy and cold, and my husband and I barely wanted to be there, so we thought we'd give Zoe a break). When we got back, Zoe was already at NeighborGirl's house. She called a few hours later and asked if she could spend the night. She called Sunday morning to say Hi, and then a few times during the day to chat. And I stopped by twice to check on her--o.k., and to give her a hug. Other than that, we went from Saturday afternoon until about 6 o'clock Sunday night without her.

It was very quiet. Zoe is our play-by-play announcer. She comments on everything that is happening, recounts things that have happened in the past, and discusses things she wishes will happen in the future. And Max spent most of the day playing on the computer, reading comic books, and watching tv. So it was unusually quiet.

Zoe came home in time for dinner. Then she told us everything that she and NeighborGirl did from the time she left until the time she returned home. Then she passed out on the couch and slept through until the morning (at least, she was still sleeping when I left for work).

So, I return to my original question....

Is it a good thing when your 5-year-old can spend a day-and-a-half away from you and not even blink?
